Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to cultivate a love of nature and establish a strong bond between children and the natural world. It is based on the principles of child-led learning, experiential education, and environmental stewardship. Our activities are set to be 100% outdoors - if it rains, we will build a shelter or erect a tent or we will use our building.
Here are some of the activities and learning opportunities that children will experience at our Forest School:
Nature Walks
We will take regular walks through the forest, observing and exploring the natural world around us. Children will learn to identify different trees, plants, and animals, and develop an appreciation for the beauty and complexity of nature.
Animal Tracking
We will teach children how to track different animals and identify their footprints and other signs. This activity will help children develop their observation skills and deepen their understanding of the natural world.
Plant Identification & Foraging
Plant identification and foraging can be a fun and educational activity for children, as they learn about the different types of plants and their uses. It can also provide an opportunity to connect with nature and develop a sense of responsibility for the environment. By learning how to forage sustainably, children can develop a deeper understanding of the importance of conservation and the need to protect our natural resources.
Outdoor Play
We believe that play is an important part of learning, and we will provide children with ample opportunities for outdoor play in a natural setting. This will include climbing trees, building dens, and engaging in other imaginative and physical play activities.
Sensory Exploration
We will provide children with opportunities to engage their senses in nature, such as by smelling different flowers, listening to bird calls, and feeling the texture of different leaves.
Nature Crafts
Nature-based crafts will provide children with opportunities to express their creativity and imagination while learning about the natural world.
Environmental stewardship
We believe that it is important to teach children about their role as caretakers of the environment. We will teach children about the importance of conservation and sustainable practices, such as composting, litter picking, and recycling.
Fire-Making & Cooking
Fire making and cooking in Forest School can be a valuable learning experience for children, teaching them essential skills such as fire safety, cooking techniques, and teamwork. It can also help to foster a deeper connection with nature and promote a sense of self-sufficiency and independence.
Shelter-building
Children will be taught how to build shelters using natural materials, such as sticks, leaves, and mud. Children will also learn about the importance of leaving no trace and dismantling shelters responsibly after use.
Mindfulness
Encouraging children to practise mindfulness in nature can help them to reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus and attention, and increase feelings of calmness and relaxation. Moreover, it can foster a deeper connection with the natural world, enhance their appreciation for the environment, and promote a greater sense of well-being.
AcroYoga
Acroyoga in the nature is a fun and engaging activity that combines yoga and acrobatics. It helps improve children's physical fitness, social skills, self-confidence, and mental well-being. Overall, Acroyoga is an excellent way to encourage children to stay active, build trust with their partners and enhance their overall health.
Intergenerational Relationships
Forest School can provide an excellent opportunity for intergenerational relationships to develop between children, parents, and grandparents. It promotes social interaction, knowledge exchange, and mutual respect, creating a positive impact on the emotional and social development of all involved.
Storytelling
Storytelling can benefit children in their early years by improving their language development, writing skills, and vocabulary. It can also foster creativity, social skills, and a love of learning and reading. Overall, storytelling is an effective and enjoyable way to promote children's growth and development.
